Plovdiv is the obvious base. Stay with access to both the canal and the centre rather than optimising only for one. The old town is atmospheric; the flatter modern city is often more practical after a long festival day.

Come for the heavy line-up; stay because Plovdiv and the road towards Buzludzha prevent the trip from becoming three days beside a stage and one flight home.
Hills of Rock uses Plovdiv’s Rowing Canal. The site is outside the old town but still close enough that a city hotel can produce an actual Bulgarian trip. The 2027 edition is confirmed, while dates and artists remain unannounced.

Arrive two days early for Plovdiv and add Buzludzha, Shipka or the Rhodopes afterwards by car. Sofia is a transport hinge, not the reason to skip the rest of Bulgaria.
The part that can go wrong
Summer heat can make the hours before sunset harder than the headline set. The official site has already sold a blind presale for 2027 but explicitly says the dates are not announced. This guide will not convert a placeholder into a fact.
